Motion is no longer ornamental. It’s structural.

In digital products, motion defines:

  • State changes

  • Hierarchy

  • Feedback

  • Emotional tone

When Motion Becomes Noise

Excessive animation:

  • Slows usability

  • Distracts from value

  • Feels performative

Motion must justify its existence.

Three Types of Meaningful Motion

1. Functional Motion - Transitions that clarify cause and effect.

2. Narrative Motion - Sequences that explain or dramatize value.

3. Emotional Motion - Subtle timing and easing that shape personality. The best motion is often barely noticeable, but deeply felt.

Designing Motion as a System

Motion needs:

  • Timing standards

  • Easing curves

  • Interaction consistency

Otherwise it becomes inconsistent and chaotic.

Movement is language. It should have grammar.
